Weekly Meeting Ends on a High Note

Report written by PTE Derrick Cheow (Squad B1)

DerrickCheowAnother weekend approaches after a hectic, nail-biting week of schooling days, it was time for our regular 1st KL Boys’ Brigade meeting on Saturday. Everyone was to get ready for the band in the new Auditorium at Wesley Legacy Center before the clock strikes half-past twelve. By then, the senior section was to fall-in in front of the Parish Hall under LCPL Lee Kai Yuan to clarify the attendance and give some briefing about the band. Band practice started with some warm-up exercises under LCPL Lee Yew Ten’s direction while waiting for our music instructor to arrive. Our instructor, Mr. Wan, came around 1.30pm and took over the band practice. With his guidance and teachings, we were able to correct from our weaknesses, master some of our skills in music in preparation for the upcoming Band Festival. This strengthens our foundation in music even though we are a small band. When the band session ended, we were told to place those instruments used by juniors at the 1st floor in the kindergarten for junior band and kept other instruments in the band room.

When the clock strikes half past two, the program proceeded with parade at Concourse, lead by CPL Leong Rong Fei. The parade call was then sounded by LCPL Alvin Tham and we began our required routine. NCOs and squad leaders began taking the attendance and uniform inspection for all members, with the sun shining down brightly on us and sweat rolling down on our cheeks. Then we were told of our schedule and our officer of the day, WO Matthew Ooi led us with a word of prayer. We prayed for strength, concentration, success of the meeting and that the Lord will keep us from harm throughout the day.

Next on the program was the Praise & Worship session where everyone adjourned to the 2nd floor of the new building in the chapel room for our worship. Fortunately for us, the room was ventilated and soon we stopped perspiring. The Praise & Worship session was led by CPL Au Kar Fei and accompanied by CPL Leong Rong Fei and PTE Wong Jin Hao. Throughout this session, we sang songs and pray in gratitude, asking for help or humbling ourselves down to the Lord. The session was very enjoyable and meaningful after all.

After Praise & Worship session, it was time for our Bible Study. We were split into two groups. The Form 1s, 2s and 3s will be under Mr. Yong and LT Derek Chan while the Form 4s and 5s will be under Mr. Cheong. This period emphasizes more on boys growing up to be true Christian Character, growing up spiritually and to share lessons and values from the Bible. We benefited so much by sharing past experienced and learned from our mistakes.

We then proceeded to our respective badge classes. Majority of us were in the Basic First Aid class during the first semester, so it was mandatory for us to take the exam under Mr. Kwan, our First Aid instructor. This exam tests our basic First Aid treatment in bandaging and dressing for fractures such as arm sling, hand and knee bandage.

At 5pm, we changed into our sports attire for games. We were split into two groups in a game of football. While chasing after the ball, scoring and defending, it was very tiring trying to keep up with the others but very essential to increase our physical fitness and our stamina. Nevertheless it was very fun and rewarding as we had great fellowship time together with our brothers. As for the juniors, they are playing a fun game throwing water balloons at each other.

Finally at 6:00 pm sharp, the time has come for us to be dismissed. Everyone was to fall-in under CPL Leong Rong Fei. A number of announcements were made by NCOs and Officers. We then proceeded with final speech of the day by our Honorary Captain, Mr. Cheong. He once again encouraged the members to bring their families and friends to the upcoming Band Festival by purchasing the ticket at RM10 each. Volunteers are also needed for the selling of tickets for the event. Lastly was the announcement of Mr. Terence Yap being promoted as Honorary Captain, who will be in-charge of the whole company when our Captain Yee is not around. (Editor’s note: shout out to Captain Yee and congratulations on his newborn girl!)

Mr. Cheong reminded us of where we are supposed to go after dismissal and that we should borrow our instruments in preparation of the competition. Mr. Cheong then closed the day with a word of prayer and ended with BB Vesper. Members had a very fun and fruitful day and went home with tired but satisfying faces.
